Board of Directors

The Applied Photophysics Board of Directors bring with them a wide range of experience and skills, in both the industrial and scientific sectors.

David Berglund


David has over 15 years experience of senior management roles spanning the financial services, high-tech, retail and life science industries during which time he has developed the ability to identify and commercialize business opportunities for hardware, software and service offerings.

He divides his time between management consulting engagements, early stage investment activity and non-executive responsibilities.

Early stage investments focus on enhancing long term value in high tech companies across a broad set of industries. In addition to a portfolio of minority investments, he works with one or two majority investments, actively driving the development of the companies.

David has a MEng in Electronic Engineering from the University of Edinburgh.

Dr David Gregson

Vice Chairman

As a former Managing Director of Applied Photophysics, David guided the company through a program of continuous development to become a major supplier of circular dichroism technology, while maintaining its market-leading position in stopped-flow analysis.

Prior to joining Applied Photophysics he gained a substantial proportion of his experience as technical director of the analytical instrument company VG Elemental (now part of Thermo Fisher Scientific).

David has a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Bristol.

Dr Gerry Ronan


Gerry worked in corporate and SMEs for 20 years before joining Swansea University as Head of Commercial Services. He is now Managing Director of Swansea Innovations and head of IP commercialization for the university where he has championed a progressive approach to technology transfer, creating a vibrant pipeline of commercial opportunities.

Gerry has considerable experience in the private sector, having worked in the fields of medical devices and drug discovery. He took a university start-up through to an investable proposition, trading profitably across 24 countries, before selling the company in 2011.

Gerry is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics with a PhD in Physics.

Dr Maris Hartmanis


Maris has more than 30 years of CEO and senior executive R&D management experience from roles in the international life science markets, including pharmaceuticals, medtech, biotech, life science supply, diagnostics and healthcare.

As a Board member of several companies he has extensive experience of private and listed companies and academia. He has also served on global executive management teams and science advisory boards.

In CEO roles he has worked with large companies in business integration, turnaround management, divestment of subsidiaries, R&D portfolio management, strategic processes, market introductions, territorial expansion and interactions with global markets, investors and shareholders.

Maris has a PhD in Biochemistry from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, where he also is an Associate Professor.

Paul Walker


Paul held technical and management roles in the steel industry before establishing his own management consultancy. In 1993 he joined Malvern Instruments where he has been Managing Director for the past 20 years.

Paul was awarded an MBE for services to Industry in 2012 and was Chairman of the Hereford and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce for five years. He has been a Non-Executive Director of the Malvern Hills Science Park since 1999 and is a Fellow of the University of Worcester.

Paul is a Chartered Engineer with BTech and MPhil degrees in Materials Science from Bradford University.

Louise Madden

Chief Executive Officer

Louise joined Applied Photophysics as Commercial Director in March 2014. Louise’s brief is to build upon the successful growth of the Applied Photophysics business to date, both organically and through the expansion of its current product portfolio, so maintaining the Company’s market leadership in its chosen fields.

Louise brings with her 10 years of experience within the analytical instruments business having spent time in both the UK and Scandinavia, working with Farfield Group Limited and Biolin Scientific AB. Before this, she spent 11 years at KPMG, where her clients ranged from owner-managed businesses to multi-national PLCs. Louise has also, during this time, gained extensive experience of mergers and acquisitions.
